The Joint Commission International

The Joint Commission International (JCI) is dedicated to improving the quality, safety and efficiency of health care services around the globe. It implements uniform, high standards for patient care and safety focus on access to care, assessment of patients, infection control, patient and family rights, and education. Standards also address facility management and safety, staff qualifications, quality improvement, organization leadership, and management of information.

  
 

The Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditration

The Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation (CCHSA) is a national, non-profit, independent organization whose role is to help health services organizations, across Canada and internationally, examine and improve the quality of care and service they provide to their clients. The mission of CCHSA is to promote excellence in health care and the effective use of resources in health services organizations nationally and internationally in order to improve the delivery of health services.

  

The Australian Council on Healthcare Standards

The Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) is an independent, not-for-profit organization, dedicated to improving the quality of health care in Australia and internationally through continual review of performance, assessment and accreditation. Established in 1974, the ACHS has maintained its position as the leading independent authority on the measurement and implementation of quality improvement systems for Australian health care facilities. Standards for evaluation, assessment and accreditation are determined by a council drawn from peak bodies in health and representatives of the Commonwealth Government, State Governments and consumers. The organization is governed by a Board of directors elected by Council members and supported by a corporate management structure that oversees the process of evaluation and assessment by professionally qualified surveyors.

  

The College of American Pathologists (CAP)

The goal of the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program is to improve patient safety by advancing the quality of pathology and laboratory services through education, standard setting, and ensuring laboratories meet or exceed regulatory requirements. Upon successful completion of the inspection process, the laboratory is awarded CAP accreditation and becomes part of an exclusive group of more than 6,000 laboratories worldwide that have met the highest standards of excellence

The Uniform Data System for Medical Rehabilitation

The Uniform Data System for Medical Rehabilitation (UDSMR) is a nonprofit organization affiliated with the Center for Functional Assessment Research, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University at Buffalo, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

UDSMR offers a wide range of services and tools to its subscribers to enable them to document the severity of patient disability and the results of medical rehabilitation in a uniform way. Establishing a common language promotes communication about disability across disciplines and provides a basis for comparison of rehabilitation outcomes. Over 1,200 facilities in the United States, Canada, and Australia subscribe to UDSMR, and the databases include over 2.5 million patient records. UDSMR has international agreements with Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, Finland, Sweden, South Africa, and Australia.

 

  

The American Association of Blood Banks

The American Association of Blood Banks was established in 1947 and is an international, not-for-profit association dedicated to the advancement of science and the practice of transfusion medicine and related biological therapies. It is committed to improving health by developing and delivering standards, accreditation and educational programs and services that optimize patient and donor care and safety.

SSH’s Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is furthering the commitment to quality and patient safety by seeking accreditation for its Blood Bank services by the AABB, whose standards are tailored to ensure the application of strict guidelines for all Blood Bank processes and procedures. These include, but are not limited to, donation services, blood component preparations and transfusion services.

The Dental Appliance Manufacturers Audi Scheme

The DAMA Scheme ) is an internationally recognized process on quality assurance and manufacturing practices specifically geared for commercial dental laboratories.

To achieve DAMAS accreditation requires passing a third party audit inspection and takes considerable investment by a laboratory operation to implement the comprehensive standards and requirements of the system. Forward thinking laboratories go through the process of implementation to improve their manufacturing operations as well as to ensure better documentation and case handling of dental patient cases prescribed by dentists.

Less than 1% of dental laboratories in North America have been recognized as DAMAS accredited. The process was established originally in the United Kingdom and now is in place in Europe, Asia, and Australia in addition to North America.
